900 Artists and 4 Days Left

August 12th, 2009

The 900th artist to secure a venue is Jean Sanders, a printmaking professor at Pennsylvania State College. You can see Jean’s work during the event at The Riverview Center.

There are less than four days until artist/venue matching ends.

***11:59pm SATURDAY, AUGUST 15, IS THE DEADLINE FOR ARTIST/VENUE MATCHING***

For anyone wondering what happens on Sunday–when the dust settles–to an artist without a venue or a venue that didn’t secure an artist, well…

Artists
Any artist who has not secured a venue by 11:59pm Saturday, August 15, will not be eligible to compete in ArtPrize 2009. Venue hosts are not obligated in any way to reach agreements after Aug 15.

Venues
Any venue that has not secured at least one artist by 11:59pm Saturday, August 15, will not be listed in any of the ArtPrize materials and will not be considered an ArtPrize venue. A venue must have ArtPrize registered artists exhibit in it to be an ArtPrize venue.

Registration fees will not be refunded
I wrote about why it’s important for registration fees to not be refunded in a post seven days ago. (Incidentally, when I announced 600 artists were secured–goodness!) But I’d like to quote what Ryan Hipp–an artist in the event–said in the comments for that post,

I support ArtPrize’s decision to not refund unsecured artist’s fees because I agree it is a chance we all take. And if there was no risk, it would have been maybe potentially 10 times as hard to find a venue if thousands more people casually entered the contest knowing worst-case-scenario, they get their money back. The fee is a promise – not to artists that a spot will be guaranteed – it is OUR promise as artists to the contest and the venues that we are committed to the event.

Anything of value is worth paying for – what everyone needs to remember is the value of the fee is not “inclusion”, the value of the fee is paying for the “chance” to take a shot at it.
