Voting Instructions and the iPhone App
Got an iPhone? Go to the iTunes store and download the ArtPrize voting app. (Right now you can only search artists, but after you register to vote you can, well, vote.)
UP AND DOWN VOTES
The first thing to know before we dive into the nitty gritty is there are two separate weeks of voting.
Week 1: Voters can vote up or vote down on any artist (only one vote per artist).
Week 2: Voters have only one vote (no down votes) and they can only use their vote for one of the top 10.
Why does Week 1 have and up and down vote? ArtPrize designed voting this way knowing that an artist with the most votes up may be the most popular, but the artist with the most votes up AND down may be the most talked about, thought about and controversial work in the event.
We see both the popular and controversial works as important to the conversation around ArtPrize. (If you’re wondering, a down vote does not cancel out an up vote. It is added to the overall tally, but calculated differently from an up vote.)
UPDATE: I wrote the above statement hastily and incorrectly. Please, see this post for more clarity on the up and down vote.
REGISTRATION
Before you can vote, you need to show up at one of the voter registration sites—in person—with a government-issued photo ID.
Register on opening night at the ArtPrize Opening Night and Registration Fair at Lyon Square. Or any time after that at one of the voter registration sites. We’ll create your account on artprize.org and email your password to you (or create your own account before you come down to register and choose your own password). Once you register, you’re ready to begin voting.
Open hours at each location vary, so be sure to check them before heading out to register.
All voting is electronic—online, via text message, mobile browser or via iPhone app.
To vote online, by mobile browser or iPhone app, you’ll need your email address and password.

The voting process seems quite complicated. I believe GREAT ART is true communication with the “common” person. Great Art doesn’t have to be explained; it’s visceral. A discussion weather or not any piece of artwork is controversial, is for the esoteric elite. Had I known that “controversy” was a determining factor, I would have entered a piece of artwork that would have had me arrested. THAT’S CONTROVERSAL.
Can you vote for only one artist or can you vote for as many as you like????
Do you know if anybody has put together a printable ballot that we can take with us to make notes as we view the artwork? It sure would be helpful.
There will not be a ballot, but the event guide will have the complete list of artists and their voting numbers.
Both my significant other and I share the same computer. I pre-registered him to vote, but now it won’t let me pre-register my information with the same email address. Please advise me on this. Thanks.
How do I know that my vote was counted?
I am in Texas. I have pre registered. It looks like since I cannot be in Grand Rapids, I cannot look at the artists work on line and vote. Is that correct? If so that is dissappointing.
[...] locations throughout the city. This is essential to the prize! Make your voice heard! They have an iphone application, text message, and online options. The instructions are simple but make sure to ask when you [...]
I’m confused. My spouse & I preregistered online from home. According to you, “HOW TO VOTE Online – Anytime after activating your voter status, sign in to your account on artprize.org, search for an artist, and start voting. It’s easy,” we can vote online, yet we’ve not received our passwords. HOW DO WE ACTIVATE OUR VOTER STATUS WITH NO PASSWORDS? Thank you.
Voting status is not activated until you complete registration in person. If you’ve pre-registered, you complete your registration when you present your ID in person at a registration site. If you’ve pre-registered, you will not receive a password. You’ll use the one you created with your account on artprize.org.
I pre-registered from my computer at home. Yesterday I went down town to complete my registration. Today I have tried to vote from my computer at home, but either my e-mail address or my password is not being accepted. I have tried to leave a message, but have not received any satisfaction. I hope this request gets through and I get some help.
I registered at the federal building yesterday to vote. After I signed up for my account on the artprize site “today” to cast my vote, I went to the artist I wanted to vote for and I was not able to vote, because it said I had to pre-register to vote.??????????
I am preregistered, registered, and cannot find the spot online where I am supposed to vote! Help! Can you please find a spot and walk us through towhat link to click on etc. in order to vote. Thanks.
I did not pre-register, I registered “live” at the G.R Public Library. When I tried to sign in to my account, I was asked for a password. Since I didn’t know I had a password, let alone what it was, I said I forgot it and filled in the resulting webpage. It then said an email had been sent with the new temporary one and instructions on how to change it. I have not received any email at all from anybody at ArtPrize. What do I do next?
All of these questions/issues above are the same ones I have. Where are the answers?
If you have not received a password from artprize, please email support@artprize.org immediately.
I have the password, logged in, got to the right site to vote, but can’t find where to plug in the number of my favorite artists????
I went down to the Art Musuem and registered to vote. I still have not received my pass word.
I can’t believe you do not have a voting sight down town for those people that do not have a email address or texting. It would seem logical since we have to come down there and register anyway. All the problems above could have been avoided.
With the amount of money being given away it seems the voting process would have been not so complicated.
ArtPrize is exciting and fun… except for this voting stuff. It seems far too cumbersome and confusing; and very disappointing. This webpage does not offer much help.
I am beyond excited about ArtPrize. Was downtown all weekend and it was as I always imagined Grand Rapids could be. The art was phenomenal and people came down to SEE art and TALK about art. It was heaven. ALL the restaurants had customers lined up out on the street. However, voting is VERY frustrating. I work in the IT industry. They really should have a ballot people could use….
So wonderful to see so many people downtown. We were there Saturday and intended to register to vote, but were more interested in seeing the exhibits than hunting up a register booth. So no vote from three of us.
I have followed directions, but the link to vote is not opening… this is very frustrating and time consuming. I went to Gr, registered, and I should be able to vote from my computer. HELP!!
Barbara, please email support@artprize.org immediately.
As expected the top 25 artists are 80%+ from Grand Rapids, MI, or nearby areas (this just goes to show how the international artists were left out from the very beginning) and most are showing at venues that either are sponsoring the event, have something to do with the ArtPrize commitee or have a voting venue on the premises or nearby. All I can say is that it’s a joke, with a huge amount of money being wasted on what is nothing more than a disguised ‘popularity’ campaign. Shame!
A wonderful event and thrilling to see so many people take interest. I am bothered by your posting of the Top 25, 50, 100 though. Don’t you think it likely that the most visible or publicized pieces already have an advantage and by posting top numbers more people will search out those pieces and vote for them, thereby skewing the fairness even more? It’s like a directed verdict…..
I totally agree with Jorge Santos & Catie Dreher. If you have actually followed this from the begin like I have, you would see that everyone or a high percentage of the top 100 already listed have had alot of tv news promotion of some kind, to be totally fair and honist the tv media should never have individualized any of the artist. What of the other 1200 artist? Where is their individual supported new coverage. Open and honist and fair contest,,, I THINK NOT. If your going to news cast one then you news cast all.
ArtPrize is a wonderful event and I’d like to see it become a permanently annual event in Grand Rapids. The city has come alive! What fun! And some of the art is truly exceptional. I was wrong about the complexity of the voting system being a deterrent. It is not that complex after all. However, the voting sysyem is unfortunately invalid. It’s as if a judge only looks at some of the pieces and not all. The farther you get from town center, the fewer the viewers. How to make it more valid? Maybe have all the entries in a huge warehouse. The giant sculptures could surround the bldg. I don’t know if this would be possible but the current system is unfair, particularly to those from other countries who put their hearts and souls into their work, spent a small fortune to get here, and had know idea that the BOB or Monroe Center would be the most populated spots. I only hope that 10 truly talented artists that have produced 10 truly worthy pieces will be the persons that will win the competition. I’m afraid, however, that sheer luck is going to be a strong deciding factor.
it took almost a week for me to get my password. I am just able to vote today and still can’t find where!
I’m all registered and signed in but cannot get to where to vote. I have my artists numbers ready! What do I do now? Time is nearly up! Help!
It was explained earlier that registration in Grand Rapids with photo ID was to make sure art work was viewed and voting was not a popularity contest. However, if an artist from out of Michigan or USA submitted work it would be impossible for them to receive the same “fair” and “honest” votes that people from Grand Rapids and surrounding areas receive. So the top ten will undoubtably be from the Grand Rapids area and leave some fantastic artists and works in the cold. Perhaps a judging panel should also be in the final determination of whose works should be in top ten and not just “popularity” or “area saturation voters”. Great event though but definately needs some work on the voting process. Plan to attend if event comes back next year and would like to see “kinks” worked out to be more fair to all art work submitted.
So, if I cannot COme to Grand Rapids I cannot vote? That’s sad.
I signed up to vote in the art prize contest and you say i have to be there to cast a vote!………What a waist of time! Take me off your dumb site.
i wanted to vote for talented lynn o’rourke 29061 entry at civic theatre.received password my last name,do not think voting worked..frustrated with the voting..
I have pre-registered, activated my registry at the Old Federal Building and have activated my e-mail and password and still am unable to vote on line.
I’ll try to vote here for my top 10 favorite…John Douglas Powers “Field of Reeds.” Artprize is great but I wonder how fair it is to award a prize based on the democratic concept of an open vote when it’s obvious many votes are not being counted. It’s like Florida all over again. I still had fun though and the art was incredible.
