ArtPrize 2010 Dates Announced
It’s been a little over a month since ArtPrize 2009 ended and we’ve been up to our eyeballs in gathering and analyzing feedback.
Although I have nothing to say yet about changes you may see in 2010, you can mark on your calendar when the event will happen.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Nov. 19, 2009 – ArtPrize founder Rick DeVos today announced that ArtPrize 2010 will be held in downtown Grand Rapids, Mich. from Sept. 22 through Oct. 10, 2010. ArtPrize is a radically open art competition giving away the world’s largest art prize. DeVos shared the new dates during a meeting with 2009 sponsors and potential 2010 sponsors.
The announcement of the dates comes just a little more than one month after the completion of ArtPrize 2009 and follows several weeks of meetings among ArtPrize organizers, volunteers, artists, venues and sponsors, said DeVos.
“ArtPrize 2010 planning is under way and designed to build on the incredible success of ArtPrize 2009,” DeVos said. “We want to continue to push the boundaries of this great experiment and to reboot the conversation about art by creating more opportunities to engage more people in the ArtPrize experience.”
ArtPrize is reviewing ways to better help visitors spend time in individual ArtPrize neighborhoods in the three-square-mile downtown ArtPrize district and is considering increasing the number of exhibition sites that are professionally curated and house a number of artists, DeVos said.
ArtPrize also wants to encourage more hospitality events for artists and sponsored prizes, he added.
ArtPrize has begun sending a save-the-date invitation to thousands of artists worldwide.
In ArtPrize 2009, Ran Ortner of Brooklyn, N.Y. captured the top prize of $250,000 for his work Open Water No. 24. The second-place award of $100,000 went to Tracy Van Duinen from Chicago for Imagine That! and the third-place award of $50,000 went to Eric Daigh from Traverse City, Mich. for Portraits. The remaining entries in the top 10 received $7,000.

Perhaps tweaking the shuttle service will attract more riders, reach farther venues, and appease the overflow of artists we should all expect and more importantly, be able to accomodate.
If a few new routes can cover ALL the outer venues, and this shuttle is easy to access and cheap to ride, people might actually utilize them. Make The Rapid’s Central Station a major hub, tailored to ArtPrize. Feature a ton of art in and outside that area. If a transportation depot can compete with the B.O.B. and the bridge, it will attract more people to the shuttle service itself, which can make tours of the outer venues easily accessible.
I know someone who works in a restaurant near 68th and Division, and last spring they’re place was getting calls from artists all over the world looking for a venue. Year one was better than expected. I say we make year two as “better than expected” as year 1. Perhaps outdoing ourselves can become a tradition, and this town can transform into the tourism hub for West Michigan our city leaders obviously want it to be.
I and my family are looking forward to competing in the next artprize. I just entered 2009, now my wife and son want to do their own entries. So 1 is now 3 entries. My 2009 was of South Haven, Michigan beach fronts at sunrise while I was salmon fishing. Everyone watches the sunset but what about the sunrise? Mr. Devos your awesome idea is like a seed planted. One plant will now become many. I bet the 2010 turn out will be at least 30% more. Have a Merry Christmas. Dan
