Final Numbers for ArtPrize 2010
After the final audit of artists and venues that secured each other for ArtPrize 2010, the results are…
- 1,713 artists
- 192 venues
Artists from 21 different countries will exhibit, including the United States. 44 different states in the U.S. will be represented.
Note: If you were watching reports last week, you may have noticed a sightly lower number of countries and slightly higher number of states. Those numbers were pulled from a report generated a day prior to Connections closing, with hundreds of artists still left to secure venues. Artists and venues also canceled connections they decided–for whatever reason–were made prematurely. Hence, the shift in numbers has the ability go up or down.

What was the total number of artists who submitted proposals?
2,249 artists submitted proposals for ArtPrize 2010. With 1,713 securing venues, that means the ratio is a bit better than 3 out of 4 artists that applied will exhibit. Although not every artist that applied will exhibit work, when you look at a large, open call event like the Sundance Film Festival–which accepts roughly 1 out of every 24 submissions–the odds of showing at ArtPrize are incredibly good.
It’s encouraging to hear what the final counts are, but at the same time, it’s a little disheartening to know not all of the artists who wanted to participate are being allowed to. Marietjie Henning, an artist from South Africa and a local venue were in the process of connecting but, due to circumstances beyond their control, were unable to make the connection before the July 1st deadline. Marietjie didn’t receive the email sent to her on June 21st until July 2nd; not all countries have the same unlimited access to the internet as we share in the USA. A request for an exemption was denied and now Artprize will be without one emerging talented artist with a story to share with the world.
No matter how many times I see the numbers posted by Art Prize, I’m blown away. To have a “contest” be so big, so close from inception is amazing. I Think Art Prize is one of the best things that ever happened to Grand Rapids, since the furniture industry grew here. I dare say that Art Prize could dwarf the furniture industry in a few years. I feel very excited and privileged to participate.
want to see the rest of the works by other artist
I feel very blessed to be one of the matched artists. It is a shame so many artists could not be so lucky. The matching is really frustrating, even for a artist close to GR. Can’t imagine what it’s like from far away.So many artist not placed and also venues that didn’t get artists. We need to work on this for 2011.
I am so excited to participate in Artprize this year! I think this competition and how the whole city of Grand Rapids has embraced it bodes very well for the viability of arts for our communities. This is a whole new way for artists to increase the economies of these towns. So many people will benefit from this, from restaurants to every local business…not to mention the increased consciousness art has a way of inspiring! Art is so cool! And so powerful!
How many Michigan artist will be participating this year?
Do many of the artist put price tags on their work during art prize? If so, Is that something that’s included on their description of the work that Art Prize prints out?
I’m VERY happy to have matched with a venue.
Helen,
Although we encourage artists to market and sell their work at ArtPrize, we discourage displaying prices next to the work. It distracts from the main action for a viewer to take, which is to vote. I recommend working with your venue to create a price sheet available on request or another discreet sales strategy during the event.

This will be my first year in Artprize. It only took me less than 3 hours to be matched to my venue after I had registered and I am so thankful for this. I wish all of the artists could have been matched. Since this is my first time I am kind of in the dark about how things work. When will we know what our voting numbers are so we can have promotional materials printed up?
Tim,
Your vote codes are currently on your profile. Just search for your name on the website, and you’ll see them on the left side of your profile.

I would like to propose a sketch crawl during artprize which consists of artists drawing in their sketchbooks where ever they may be during the dates of artprize and posting sketches to the internet (this part, i do not have worked out yet)…is there a spot on the artprize website?
so…sketch, add a little color anything! This gives the artist the opportunity to see and visitors a the chance to enjoy the view , plus it may encourage others to draw!!!!!! Feel free to give away sketches!! Children especially, love to interact and take something home!
Laurel,
This is a great idea. There’s not a spot on the ArtPrize website for it, but it could be a great addition to the ArtPrize Flickr Group:

How can I get involved for next year as a new artist? Thanks
Too bad locations are not assigned by a random draw. It would be nice if all selected artists had an equal chance at showing at a high traffic area.
